Thick Haze Covers Northern and Central India Due to Aerosol Pollution
IN · Published Oct 23, 2026
• On 21 October 2026, a dense haze was observed over northern and central India, as captured by NASA's Terra satellite using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS).
• The haze, which obscured much of west-central India, was attributed to a combination of suspended aerosols and specific weather conditions.

Impact & Risks

The thick haze poses significant health risks, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions, children, and the elderly. Prolonged exposure to high levels of aerosol pollution can exacerbate respiratory and cardiovascular issues. Visibility in affected areas is also likely to be reduced, potentially disrupting transportation and daily activities. The Gulf of Khambhat and surrounding regions are particularly impacted, with sediment and haze affecting both air and water quality.
